History

Historical Context

In January 1993 the Braer Storm, the strongest extratropical cyclone recorded over the North Atlantic, produced 100-mph gusts in northern Scotland and broke the MV Braer, spilling 84,500 tonnes of oil. That event prompted a £30 million upgrade of the Scottish Government’s weather-alert system, which underpinned the response to the October 1993 gale that again saw 100-mph gusts, ferry cancellations and stranded passengers.
