History

Historical Context

In 1937, aviator Amelia Earhart vanished over the Pacific while piloting her Lockheed Model 10-E Electra, prompting a massive U.S. Navy search. The Navy deployed 20 aircraft, 5,000 personnel, and $2 million in resources, yet found only scattered debris on Howland Island. Today’s 17-member Nikumaroro expedition, led by Rick Pettigrew and backed by the National Geographic Society, mirrors that 1937 effort to locate Earhart’s missing Electra. If the team confirms the Taraia Object as Earhart’s aircraft, it could finally close a 90-year mystery and reshape Pacific aviation history.
