History

Historical Context

Poland’s 12 March 1999 NATO accession integrated the country into the alliance’s defence framework as part of NATO’s eastward enlargement that now includes 32 members. After Russia’s 2025 drone incursions triggered NATO’s Operation Eastern Sentry, the alliance bolstered its eastern flank. In 2024 Kongsberg opened a counter-drone plant in Poland, continuing the post-accession focus on modernising air-defence capabilities.
