History

Historical Context

When Rockstar Games released Grand Theft Auto III on October 22, 2001, the PlayStation 2-based open-world title reshaped interactive entertainment. The game, published by Take-Two Interactive and co-created by Sam Houser, sold more than 14.5 million copies worldwide by 2005, generating $1 billion revenue. Its groundbreaking in-engine trailer technique set a precedent that Rockstar now mirrors in the 2026 Grand Theft Auto VI teaser, captured entirely in-game on a PlayStation 5. That legacy pressures the franchise to sustain cultural relevance, prompting extensive music collaborations and pre-order strategies that could define the next decade of gaming.
