History

Historical Context

The 2014 Rolling Stone story alleging a gang rape at UVA’s Phi Kappa Psi sparked a police probe, a campus-wide suspension of Greek life in 2014, and lawsuits that ended with a $1.65 million settlement in 2017. That controversy prompted national calls for stricter fraternity oversight, which now echo in the Alpha Epsilon Pi assault allegations at the University of Illinois.
