History

Historical Context

In April 2019 Microsoft became the third U.S. firm valued at over $1 trillion, reflecting its cloud-first shift after Satya Nadella became CEO in 2014. The $1 billion Azure partnership with OpenAI that year built on that direction, and the 2024 London AI hub shows the company’s continued push to bind large-scale models to proprietary hardware, a pattern now echoed by Meta and Apple.
