Southern Nevada Water Authority reverted to its 2020 deep-lake intake after Lake Mead’s shoreline receded.

A second barrel discovered days later was empty, adding complexity to the mystery.
Paddleboarders found human remains on a newly exposed sand bar, but officials reported no foul play.

History

Historical Context

In 1996, Nevada inaugurated its state DNA laboratory, enabling forensic breakthroughs that later solved decades-old cold cases nationwide. The lab, funded with $30 million by the Nevada Department of Public Safety and Clark County, processed over 12,000 samples by 2005. Today, LVMPD coroner Melanie Rouse and Southern Nevada Water Authority rely on that capability to identify 1970s-80s Lake Mead remains and adjust water intakes. These identifications pressure law-enforcement to revisit organized-crime theories while water officials confront receding shorelines affecting 2.4 million residents.
