History

Historical Context

Fitbit launched the Charge HR in October 2014, priced at $130 and adding a subscription option that marked its first mainstream wearable bundle. The approach foreshadowed Amazon’s 2024 Bee Frontier and Bee Eclipse devices, which also combine hardware with a recurring service. After Google bought Fitbit in 2021, regulators intensified scrutiny of such subscription-driven wearables.
