History

Historical Context

Russia’s 2014 seizure of Crimea, executed by unmarked troops and roughly 50–119 armed men who seized airports and the parliament, triggered NATO condemnation and a UN resolution rejecting the referendum. The episode demonstrated how swift military actions can alter Black Sea security, leading NATO allies to strengthen surveillance after recent drone incursions threatening merchant vessels in the region.
