History

Historical Context

The April 20, 1999 Columbine massacre, where Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 13 students and a teacher, sparked school-security reforms and a wave of copycat attacks. The Silver Rail Elementary shooting in Bend, Oregon, by a 16-year-old, revived calls from Governor Tina Kotek and Senator Ron Wyden for tighter gun laws and led the House Judiciary Committee to revisit the 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban.
