History

Historical Context

In October 1973 Saudi Arabia led OAPEC’s 5 % production cut and embargo that slashed U.S. oil imports by about 5 million barrels per day, driving gasoline prices up 43% and prompting Project Independence. The episode showed how oil could be wielded as a geopolitical weapon. Russia’s 2022 strikes on Ukrainian gas sites and disputed diesel shipment echo that same “oil weapon” strategy, reviving calls for energy diversification.
