The Announcement

The family of former Newstalk ZB Afternoons presenter Danny Watson confirmed that he passed away peacefully on Thursday October 15, surrounded by his whanau and “deep aroha.” The family thanked medical staff, North Harbour Hospice and the wider community for their support and asked that donations be made to hospice in his honour.

Career Highlights

Watson’s broadcasting career began after a flatmate spotted a newspaper advertisement for the children’s programme Spot On, leading to a role that launched a decades-long presence on New Zealand television. He later appeared on What Now?, the junior sports show World of Sport, the variety series Danny’s Cafe, and TV3’s version of Candid Camera. In 2014 he presented a live talk-back from Scott Base in Antarctica, a rare on-air location for a talk-back host. From 2000 to 2015 he hosted Newstalk ZB’s Afternoons slot, a fifteen-year tenure that made his voice a daily fixture for many listeners. In 2022 he joined the short-lived Today FM network.

The family characterised Watson as a man of “extraordinary depth,” with a “wealth of knowledge,” boundless energy and an “endless appetite for life.”
