Police Limit Demonstrations

The Cockroach Janta Party scheduled a “Lehra Do Tiranga” protest at Central Park, Connaught Place, Delhi, 5 p.m., 16 Oct 2026.
A senior police officer said Connaught Place is not a legal protest site and ordered demonstrations be limited to Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground or CBD Ground.
The Delhi High Court agreed to hear a plea to halt the protest.
CJP Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were placed in five-day custody for peace-bond violations at Jantar Mantar.

History

Historical Context

In 2009, India's Supreme Court upheld the Election Commission's authority to delete 10 million duplicate voter entries, triggering nationwide protests. The ruling prompted the Election Commission, led by Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla, to deploy over 5,000 police officers across Delhi's central districts. Today's Cockroach Janta Party demand for Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over a 130-million-name voter purge mirrors those 2009 grievances, with authorities again restricting rallies to Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground, and CBD Ground. The recurrence suggests that unresolved electoral roll reforms may repeatedly fuel legal battles and large-scale demonstrations, pressuring the Delhi High Court to intervene.
