History

Historical Context

Columbine’s April 1999 massacre, in which Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 13 students and a teacher, triggered nationwide security upgrades—metal detectors, see-through backpacks, and zero-tolerance rules—and the IARD active-shooter response model. The incident also sparked a copy-cat wave, with more than 70 related attacks by 2025, shaping today’s debate after the recent Plano, Texas elementary shooting.
