History

Historical Context

The 1991 Crown Heights riot—sparked when a car in Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson’s motorcade killed child Gavin Cato—killed two and triggered a three-day clash. The unrest helped pass the 1993 Hate Crimes Statistics Act and toppled Mayor David Dinkins. Today, Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s walkout and DSA calls to fire Police Chief Jessica Tisch echo those historic tensions.
