Summary

John Dobson Announces Squad

Stormers director of rugby John Dobson announced the matchday squad early to boost attendance and buzz.
Dobson said a South African semi-final is needed to silence European critics of the clubs’ Champions Cup role.
European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) officials urged South African franchises to prioritize the tournament and field their strongest line-ups.
Former England captain Lawrence Dallaglio noted surprisingly low South African public interest ahead of the opening fixtures.

History

Historical Context

In 2014 EPCR replaced the Heineken Cup with the European Rugby Champions Cup after English and French clubs withdrew in 2012. The 2022 expansion added South African franchises, raising the tournament’s market value by €15 million and bringing the field to 24 clubs. Today Glasgow Warriors sign England-capped hooker Jack Singleton while the Stormers unveil their squad, reflecting the cross-hemisphere recruitment drive sparked by that expansion.
