The Election Commission of India ordered a Special Summary Revision of electoral rolls in 17 states and Union Territories, effective for the Jan 1 2027 qualifying date.
Political parties will receive the revised rolls in a readable PDF format for the first time.
The SSR covers Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Assam, Bihar, and 13 other regions.
Draft rolls will be released Nov 12, with final rolls published Jan 4 2027.

Disenfranchisement Concerns Rise

The Election Commission of India ordered a Special Summary Revision of electoral rolls in 17 states and Union Territories, to be completed by 1 January 2027.
The SSR was launched after protests that the earlier Special Intensive Revision erased millions of voters, sparking fears of widespread disenfranchisement.
The Commission will issue readable PDF rolls, which opposition parties deem insufficient without machine-readable files.
Applicants no longer need citizenship proof or prior roll matching.
