History

Historical Context

India and Nepal’s open 1,770-km border stems from the 1950 Treaty of Peace and Friendship, which granted reciprocal movement rights. Decades of disputes—such as the 2020 Lipulekh road controversy—have led both governments to form joint task forces against smuggling. The recent recovery of influencer Shraddha Dubey’s SUV near Rupaidiha, and Uttar Pradesh police’s Rs 25,000 bounty, illustrate those ongoing security pressures.
