Over 2,000 Microsoft employees signed a No Azure for Apartheid petition demanding an independent audit.

History

Historical Context

The 1985 passage of the U.S. Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act, signed by President Ronald Reagan, forced corporate disengagement from South Africa. Congress mandated that firms such as IBM and General Motors withdraw $1.5 billion in investments, triggering nationwide divestment campaigns. Today, Microsoft’s Azure services to Israel’s Ministry of Defence and the BDS-led Xbox boycott echo pressure tactics that targeted corporations during the anti-apartheid movement. The precedent suggests sustained activist leverage can compel tech giants to reassess defense contracts, potentially reshaping global supply chains and corporate policy.
