Historical Context

After a 2026 SNL monologue drew public criticism, NBC faces pressure to tighten comedy oversight, recalling the 2004 Super Bowl halftime “wardrobe malfunction” that prompted the FCC, led by Chairman Michael Powell, to levy a record $550,000 fine against CBS and trigger industry-wide content reviews. The earlier backlash sparked lasting stricter broadcast standards in television.
