By Drooid · · How we work
Historic Title Win
At Ascot’s Champions Day, 20-year-old Billy Loughnane was officially crowned Flat racing’s champion jockey, the youngest to claim the title in more than a century. Pat Eddery won his first championship at 22, Frankie Dettori at 23, and Lester Piggott was twice that age. Loughnane’s lead over defending champion Oisin Murphy grew to 29 wins, with the Irishman recording 222 victories as the season approached its conclusion.
Rapid Rise from Apprentice to Champion
Loughnane’s first ride came as a 16-year-old apprentice at Wolverhampton in October 2022. Within weeks he amassed more than 20 winners, briefly topping the flat jockey standings. By May 2024 his campaign accelerated, and a mid-July surge overtook Murphy, establishing a dominant position that persisted through the championship window (early May to mid-October). He became the only jockey to reach 150 wins during the title race and logged over 220 wins across all meetings for the year.
Season Statistics and Records
- 150 wins in the championship period – a record for the current season.
- 220+ total wins for the year, the highest tally among his peers.
- Lead of 29 wins over the nearest challenger, Oisin Murphy.
- Goal: surpass Sir Gordon Richards’ 1947 record of 269 flat winners in a calendar year.
Future Ambitions
Loughnane says he will continue racing through the November break, with a possible appearance in Bahrain, before assessing his chances of breaking the 269-winner mark in December. He also plans to defend his title and target as many Group One victories as possible in 2027.
