Rising Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz: Maritime Attacks and U.S. Naval Build-Up

By Drooid · · How we work

Surge in Iranian Maritime Attacks

In a two-week span, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported that Iran targeted at least 24 commercial vessels near the Strait of Hormuz. Britain’s Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) added that seven additional incidents occurred between a Monday and Wednesday in the same period. Iranian senior officials, including Major General Mostafa Izadi of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and army commander-in-chief Amir Hatami, warned that Iran’s forces are prepared for “any battle” and that attacks on Iranian infrastructure would trigger proportional strikes on Israeli and allied targets. The Supreme National Security Council’s secretary, Mohsen Rezaei, indicated that U.S. data-centre and AI infrastructure could be within range if hostilities resume.

Expanded U.S. Naval Presence

The U.S. Naval Institute confirmed that the aircraft carriers USS George Washington and USS George H.W. Bush are operating concurrently in the Arabian Sea, a routine rotation but notable for its simultaneity. CENTCOM disclosed that, as of 5 October, U.S. forces had altered the routes of 130 commercial vessels under the naval blockade of Iran. Satellite-derived images showed an F-15E refuelled by a KC-135 and an F-35B launching from the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer.

Personnel Deployments and Flight Activity

Reports dated 1 October claimed the U.S. was moving roughly 9,000 troops and sailors to the region with the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group and the amphibious ready group centered on USS Makin Island. An unnamed U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, suggested the total number of American sailors and Marines in the area could exceed 20,000. The flight-tracking account IntelSky observed a roughly 50 % rise in U.S. Air Force tanker sorties during the first half of October compared with September, though these figures have not been independently verified.

Political Statements and Possible Escalation

Former President Donald Trump told an interview earlier this month that intensified U.S. air strikes against Iran after the U.S. midterm elections on 3 November were possible, while declining to detail specific plans. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed the latest developments, according to Israeli Channel 12, which reported unusual military movements inside Iran but stopped short of calling for immediate action.

Potential Implications

The convergence of Iranian vessel attacks, heightened U.S. carrier activity, and political rhetoric suggests a risk of broader confrontation in the Gulf region. While the U.S. has not confirmed a change in operational intent, the reported increase in troop numbers and flight operations, combined with Iranian warnings of proportional retaliation, heighten uncertainty for commercial shipping and regional stability.
