History

Historical Context

In 1973 the Nobel Committee awarded the Peace Prize to U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and North Vietnamese negotiator Lê Duc Tho for the Paris cease-fire, prompting two committee resignations and protests; Tho refused the award and Kissinger later tried to return it. The 2023 false claim by President Donald Trump that he had won the prize revived the same controversy over political misuse of the Nobel.
