History

Historical Context

When Saudi Arabia and its allies launched the 2015 coalition air campaign in Yemen, the war escalated into a nationwide humanitarian disaster. The United Nations estimated over 3 million Yemenis faced food insecurity by 2016, and the Red Cross recorded 5,000 civilian casualties from coalition strikes. Similarly, in October 2026 Houthi forces encircled Taiz, severing the Aden highway, displacing over 121,000 residents and starving hospitals of diesel. The recurring sieges underscore how past coalition tactics have entrenched supply-line vulnerabilities, prompting renewed UN calls for a durable ceasefire and humanitarian corridors.
