Elon Musk’s $158 Million Injection Fuels Texas Senate Showdown

By Drooid · · How we work

Musk’s Direct Funding to GOP Super-PACs

Elon Musk contributed $75 million on September 9 and a further $83 million on September 23, according to the third-quarter report from the Senate Leadership Fund, the principal Republican super-PAC targeting Senate races. The combined $158 million was transferred to Texas PAC, a group created specifically to back Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s bid for the U.S. Senate.

Campaign Finance Landscape

The Texas PAC’s ad purchases surged, spending more than $77 million on television ads in September alone and projecting total expenditures of nearly $160 million through Election Day, as reported by AdImpact data cited by CNN. By contrast, Democratic state Rep. James Talarico raised $64 million in the third quarter, bringing his campaign’s cumulative receipts since September 2025 to over $134.3 million, according to his own statement.

Race Dynamics and Polling

Both outlets note that the contest remains a “dead-heat” with no clear leader in recent Real Clear Politics averages. CNN adds that total advertising outlays in the race have already exceeded half a billion dollars, underscoring the unprecedented financial intensity of the contest.

Official Responses

President Donald Trump appeared with Paxton at a rally in San Antonio’s Freeman Coliseum on October 7, shaking hands with the Republican candidate. In a separate appearance, Trump told reporters he would return to Texas if necessary, reinforcing his personal involvement in the race. USA Today reports that Musk, who donated nearly $300 million to Republican groups in 2024, serves as a top adviser to Trump as head of the Department of Government Efficiency.

Conflicting Reports & Gaps

USA Today states that Musk’s $83 million contribution was made earlier in the month and that the Senate Leadership Fund immediately passed the funds to Texas PAC shortly thereafter, whereas CNN records the second donation on September 23 and does not detail the subsequent transfer dates. The precise timing of the fund flow therefore remains unclear.
