History

Historical Context

The 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, orchestrated by Timothy McVeigh, devastated the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, killing 168 people. The FBI’s investigation recovered 4,800 pounds of ammonium nitrate, and the Department of Justice later secured a death sentence for McVeigh. Similarly, the 2026 Aurora Hindu temple case involves Alexandros Paporakis, whose AR-style rifle cache and white-supremacist manifesto echo McVeigh’s extremist preparation. These incidents underscore the Department of Homeland Security’s intensified focus on domestic terrorism, prompting stricter gun-control measures and expanded hate-crime monitoring.
