History

Historical Context

Following the 1991 end of apartheid, the 1992 South African Grand Prix returned to a revised Kyalami circuit, the first World Championship race in Africa since the 1985 event that FISA president Jean-Marie Balestre said would not return under apartheid. Nigel Mansell won the 72-lap race, showing how political reform reopened motorsport for tourism and infrastructure growth.
