History

Historical Context

On 4 March 2018, 31-year-old Italian defender Davide Astori died of cardiac arrest in his Udine hotel, causing Serie A postponements, a league-wide minute’s silence and retirement of his number 13 jersey. The 16 October 2026 shower death of La Rochelle centre Hyron Andrews led EPCR and local authorities to suspend matches and open a safety probe. Both events forced football and rugby bodies to reassess player health protocols.
