Apple Rolls Out Free Software Features for HomePod 2

By Drooid · · How we work

New Visual and Audio Enhancements

The first upgrade, Sound Glow, adds a dynamic light display to the top of the HomePod. When paired with an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone, the speaker will illuminate in colors that match the currently playing album artwork and pulse in time with the music’s bass and treble. Apple describes the effect as a “visual canvas” that reacts in real time, and the same functionality will be available on the HomePod mini 2.

Integration with macOS

Apple’s next feature lets users set a HomePod as the default speaker for any Mac equipped with Wi-Fi 6E or later. Previously, HomePods could be used via AirPlay, but the new default-speaker option promises a more seamless and reliable connection for both desktop and laptop Macs. The capability applies to both the HomePod mini 2 and the HomePod (2nd generation).

Expanded Home Theater Capability

A new surround-sound mode, exclusive to the 4th-generation Apple TV 4K, enables a full-immersion audio setup using four HomePods—two front and two rear. Apple’s press release specifies that the configuration requires matching pairs of either HomePod mini 2 or HomePod (2nd generation) speakers, paired with the latest Apple TV 4K software.

Outlook and Availability

Apple has not disclosed exact launch dates for the three HomePod features, but they are expected to debut alongside iOS 27. The company’s announcements suggest a continued focus on integrating its audio hardware more tightly with the broader Apple ecosystem, enhancing both visual appeal and multi-room entertainment experiences.
