History

Historical Context

In February 2014, Russian troops seized Crimea’s airports and parliament, prompting a disputed referendum on 16 March and annexation on 18 March; on 5 March more than 700 soldiers defected to the Crimean administration. The takeover sparked a pro-Russian insurgency in Donbas that grew into war, leading Kyiv to create a Ministry of Occupied Territories in April 2016. The legacy fuels drone strikes on Kharkiv and Volyn, underscoring civilian hardship.
