History

Historical Context

In March 2014 the United States and EU imposed sweeping sanctions after Russia annexed Crimea, freezing about $20 billion in assets and targeting Rosneft and other energy firms. Those measures have been renewed and expanded through the 2022 invasion, creating a coordinated pressure framework. Trump’s recent decision to curb Starshield drone aid and halt a $4 billion diesel deal signals a possible weakening of that long-standing sanctions regime.
