Oil Prices Spike Amid Iran and Ukraine Conflicts, Prompting Policy Moves

Surge in Benchmark Crude Prices
Investors pushed Brent crude above $110 a barrel and U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) to $101.41, marking the first time WTI crossed the $100 threshold since the previous year. Regular gasoline averaged $4.32 per gallon nationwide, while diesel futures rose more than 1 %. The rally contributed to a broader market sell-off, with the S&P 500 slipping over 1 % and the Nasdaq Composite dropping about 2 % by mid-afternoon.
Geopolitical Drivers: Hormuz Closure and Ukraine War
The price gains trace to two overlapping conflicts. After the United States and Israel struck Iranian targets in late February, the Strait of Hormuz—a key chokepoint for global oil shipments—was closed, tightening supply. Simultaneously, Ukrainian forces have repeatedly hit Russian energy infrastructure, curtailing Russia’s diesel output and forcing buyers to seek alternative sources. Refineries in the United States and Europe are already operating near capacity, limiting the ability to expand diesel production quickly.
Trump Administration’s Response
President Donald Trump has highlighted diesel’s role in inflation and has taken several steps to address rising costs. The administration released portions of strategic diesel and crude reserves and eased regulations on off-road “red-dye” diesel. When those measures failed to lower prices, the president moved this month to relax U.S. sanctions on Russia, aiming to enable President Vladimir Putin to release additional diesel to the market. The sanction relief drew swift condemnation from bipartisan U.S. lawmakers, and, as of the latest reports, no Russian diesel shipments have been confirmed in global markets. Russian refining capacity remains impaired, and a Russian refinery recently suspended crude operations after what the Russian Defense Ministry described as a “massive attack” by Ukraine.
Market and Analyst Outlook
Mason Mendez, a global real-assets analyst at Wells Fargo, said investors remain uneasy about possible further escalation in the Middle East and that rebuilding depleted global inventories could sustain elevated energy prices through 2027.
Legislative Pushback
A coalition of American lawmakers introduced legislation to block the Russia-diesel arrangement. While the bill faces slim odds in the currently Republican-controlled House, analysts note that a shift to Democratic control after the upcoming elections could revive the effort, adding another layer of uncertainty to the diesel-price outlook.
