History

Historical Context

The 1995 Rugby World Cup final in Johannesburg, held on 24 June before 65,000 fans, marked South Africa’s return to international sport after apartheid and featured President Nelson Mandela handing the Webb Ellis Cup to captain François Pienaar. That symbolic unity echoes today as the 2024 Cup opener between Gloucester Rugby and Union Bordeaux Bègles observed a minute’s silence for Hyron Andrews, underscoring rugby’s ongoing role in reconciliation.
