History

Historical Context

In 1998 the Bowl Championship Series replaced the Bowl Alliance, rotating the national title among the Rose, Fiesta, Sugar and Orange bowls and guaranteeing the top two ranked teams a championship game. The BCS’s emphasis on strength-of-schedule and automatic-qualifier conference tie-ins pushed the SEC and Big Ten to schedule non-conference games, a trend echoed today in calls for a national office to police Notre Dame’s schedule.
