History

Historical Context

The 2007 San Francisco Zoo tiger escape, where Siberian tiger Tatiana killed 17-year-old Carlos Sousa and triggered AZA-mandated safety upgrades and an $18,000 state fine, set a national precedent for stricter enclosure standards. That legacy resurfaced after the 10 Oct 2026 fatal tiger incident at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, prompting Doncaster Council and the ICO to consider tighter oversight.
