Summary

Dodgers Reconsider Ohtani Role

Dodgers front office is weighing ending Shohei Ohtani’s two-way role in favor of a full-time designated hitter.
Manager Dave Roberts defended playing Ohtani despite injuries, raising questions about team hierarchy.
Medical staff linked Ohtani’s July pitching shutdown to a steep drop in his batting average.
Analysts noted a correlation between Ohtani’s August throwing program and his .198 OPS slump.

History

Historical Context

After owners, led by acting commissioner Bud Selig, approved a salary-cap-linked revenue-sharing plan on Jan 18 1994, the MLBPA rejected it, and a strike began Aug 12 1994, canceling the World Series and costing owners $580 million in revenue. The dispute reshaped labor talks, and the Dodgers now face a $370.5 million 2027 payroll as the current CBA expires Dec 1, echoing those 1994 fiscal tensions.
