The city’s resurgence over the past 15 years is credited to a walkable centre built around the river, integration of Maori culture, a vibrant creative scene, and a growing food reputation that has attracted Michelin attention. Outdoor adventures, stargazing, wildlife and dramatic surrounding landscapes are also cited as factors that differentiate Christchurch from other destinations.
Survey Findings on Traveller Preferences
The 11th-year study surveyed more than 28,000 travellers from 32 countries, including 1,008 New Zealanders. Highlights include:
- 73 % would choose a holiday based on the desired feeling rather than the location.
- 72 % are interested in trips that are “completely out of character.”
- 56 % expressed interest in paranormal experiences; 42 % would seek contact with the “other side.”
- 58 % said the final day of a trip is marred by thoughts of returning to work, and one-third took a laptop with them.
- Nearly half would let artificial intelligence handle work while away.
- 92 % would embark on a long-haul journey if it guaranteed they arrived rested, compared with a global average of 89 %.
