Historical Context

In January 1977 ABC broadcast the eight-night miniseries Roots, produced by David L. Wolper, drawing an estimated 130 million viewers and winning nine Emmys and a Peabody. Its success proved that costly, multi-part storytelling could attract nationwide audiences, paving the way for Spielberg-Hanks’ 2001 HBO war epic Band of Brothers, which earned a 2002 Emmy and spawned further high-budget series.
