History

Historical Context

In the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy, the BCCI installed Rahul Dravid as stand-in captain after Sourav Ganguly’s injury for the tournament. India played three matches, winning only one, while bowler Harbhajan Singh missed the tournament due to a significant shoulder problem. Similarly, the 2024 New Zealand tour sees BCCI rotating captains—Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, and Ishan Kishan—while Bumrah sits out the ODIs. These captaincy experiments test leadership depth and may influence India's strategic planning for the upcoming 2025 World Test Championship cycle.
