History

Historical Context

In 1988, Operation Praying Mantis saw the United States decisively neutralize Iranian naval forces, securing the Strait of Hormuz for commercial traffic. During that campaign, the U.S. Navy escorted over 1,000 merchant vessels, sank four warships and destroyed two offshore oil platforms, proving dominance in the region. Now, U.S. Central Command asserts control as UKMTO records twelve attacks, while Iran’s Maj. Gen. Amir Hatami vows to keep the strait closed. Consequently, the United States has moved over 100 million barrels of crude in seven days, underscoring the strait’s pivotal role in global energy supply.
