History

Historical Context

Just weeks after the 28 October 1995 Baku Metro fire that killed 289 people—the deadliest subway disaster ever—Russia’s Moscow Metro suffered a December 20 blaze that injured hundreds. The back-to-back incidents revived memories of earlier catastrophes, such as the 1903 Paris Métro fire (84 deaths) and New York’s 1918 Malbone wreck (>=93 deaths), underscoring persistent safety challenges in post-Soviet transit systems.
