History

Historical Context

On 15 March 2019 Australian Brenton Tarrant livestreamed attacks on Christchurch’s Al Noor Mosque and Linwood Islamic Centre, killing 51 and injuring 89. The massacre spurred global copycat plots, the rise of online extremist groups such as Terrorgram, and heightened security at places of worship. Those trends framed the 2024 Illinois arrest of Alexandros Paporakis, whose manifesto and AR-15-style rifle echoed Christchurch’s tactics.
