Regulatory Compliance Emphasis

Elon Musk replied “Much appreciated” to Reliance Industries on Oct 16 2026 about Jio satellite services awaiting Indian clearances.
The response signaled a conciliatory shift after Musk’s earlier accusations that Indian oligarchs were blocking Starlink’s entry.
Starlink said it has worked with Indian regulators for over five years and built gateways.
India requires providers to route traffic through domestic gateways, allow monitoring, and ban overseas decryption.

Blindspot

The RSS-affiliated Swadeshi Jagran Manch warned that satellite links could bypass Indian gateways, making lawful monitoring harder and potentially aiding hostile actors.

History

Historical Context

The 1998 TRAI mandate that all satellite traffic use Indian gateways mirrors the country’s 1990s turn toward global markets, a shift first symbolized by the 1924 Gateway of India arch built to welcome overseas arrivals. The rule now obliges Reliance Jio’s 1,600-satellite plan and Elon Musk’s Starlink to obtain clearance, tying historic openness to modern broadband ambitions.
