History

Historical Context

The 1999 Columbine High School massacre in Littleton, Colorado, where Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 13 and wounded 24, shocked the nation. In response, the 1993 Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, championed by President Clinton, instituted background checks for 90% of gun sales. Today, Kaylub Giamanco’s lethal defense at Silver Rail Elementary echoes that civilian intervention model, mirroring the 1999 call for armed responders. The episode revives debates on the Brady Act’s effectiveness, prompting legislators like Senator Manchin to reconsider federal gun-control measures in 2024.
