History

Historical Context

The 1994 Major League Baseball strike, beginning August 12, 1994, forced the World Series cancellation and dramatically reshaped the sport’s calendar. Commissioner Bud Selig, the MLB Players Association, and clubs like the Cleveland Indians and New York Yankees endured a 232-day stoppage costing owners about $580 million. Similarly, today’s ALCS Game 4 between the Cleveland Guardians and the Tampa Bay Rays was postponed by rain, echoing disruptions that altered postseason timing and travel. These disruptions expose baseball’s exposure to external forces, urging leagues to adopt flexible scheduling to safeguard competitive integrity.
