ArtCraft: AI-Powered Open-Source Alternatives to Adobe Creative Cloud

By Drooid · · How we work

Core Initiative – Rebuilding Adobe’s Flagship Apps with AI

Software engineer Brandon Thomas launched the ArtCraft project to create free, open-source replacements for seven Adobe Creative Cloud applications—Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Lightroom, Illustrator, Acrobat, After Effects, and InDesign. Using the AI coding model Claude Opus 5.5, Thomas and contributors have produced functional equivalents—PhotoCraft, FilmCraft, LightCraft, VectorCraft, PDFCraft, MotionCraft, and LayoutCraft—available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The suite is written in Rust for performance and memory safety.

Background & Context – Subscription Fatigue and AI Coding Advances

Thomas, a computer-science major with 15 years of software-engineering experience, said on Reddit that repeated Adobe cancellation fees left him “with a grudge” against the subscription model. Advances in AI coding assistants provided the means to recreate Adobe’s tools without a large team or extensive funding.

Technical Foundations – Rust, Claude Opus 5.5, Cross-Platform Support

The suite is built in Rust, enabling native performance on the three major desktop OSes. Development was accelerated by Claude Opus 5.5, which Thomas called the “coding engine” that turned his frustration into functional code. The GitHub repository hosts source code and an ArtCraft Launcher that bundles the desktop versions.

Feature Highlights & Early Performance

  • PhotoCraft offers 67 editing tools, including layers, masks, smart objects, adjustment layers, and filters, and can open, edit, and save PSD files.
  • LightCraft provides nondestructive editing, RAW processing, selective masking, HDR merging, panorama stitching, batch editing, and AI-powered masking via Meta’s SAM 3 model (downloadable separately).
  • PDFCraft includes 80+ tools for annotation, form filling, merging, splitting, signatures, redaction, password protection, and OCR, with export to Word, image, and plain-text formats; complex layout preservation remains a work-in-progress.

Testing by the author and a colleague, Dhruv, confirmed the apps handle everyday tasks well, though some professional-grade features lag behind Adobe’s implementations.

Conflicting Reports & Gaps

The source material presents a consistent view of capabilities but notes ongoing development of AI-driven features, RAW compatibility, and high-fidelity document conversion. No quantitative benchmarks are provided, leaving speed and resource-usage comparisons with Adobe unverified.

Official Statements & Responses

Thomas explained on Reddit that Adobe’s recurring cancellation fees “got me so frustrated” and motivated him to build a free alternative.

What’s Next – Ongoing Development and Community Involvement

ArtCraft remains open source, inviting contributions via GitHub. Developers plan to expand feature sets, improve AI-assisted tools, and refine cross-platform stability. Broader community testing will shape its evolution toward a viable, cost-free alternative to Adobe’s subscription ecosystem.
