Fire officials say ten people died in a blaze at TUPTUP Resto and Resort, Cox’s Bazar.
Resort in-charge Md Suman said an electrical short circuit likely triggered the fire.
Eight of the deceased were members of the same family staying at the resort.
Fire Service spokesman Talha Bin Jasim confirmed the blaze was fully extinguished by about 11 am.
Seven were injured, including a physician and his wife with 5 percent body burns.

Summary

Fire Service Warns

The resort operated without a fire-service licence despite a June safety notice.
Fire Service Director General Brigadier General Sultanul Afreen Zunaid said the licence had not been renewed.
The nearest fire station was 22 kilometres away, delaying initial firefighting efforts.
The Fire Service will issue notices to other risky resorts lacking approvals.
Officials are considering three-wheeled vehicles and motorcycles to reach narrow-road sites faster.

History

Historical Context

On February 20 2003 the Station nightclub fire in West Warwick killed 100 people, prompting Governor Donald Carcieri to ban pyrotechnics in venues under 300 people and to mandate sprinklers for nightclubs holding over 150 patrons. The incident also spurred NFPA’s July 2003 interim amendments requiring sprinklers in assembly occupancies, reforms now cited in Bangladesh’s fire-safety debates.
