In 1999 the U.S. Department of Defense re-activated Selective Availability, deliberately inserting up to 100 m of error into civilian GPS signals to deny hostile forces precise navigation. President Bill Clinton ordered the feature disabled on 2 May 2000, and subsequent GPS-III satellites were designed without SA capability, paving the way for the high-accuracy civilian satellite links now used by modern drones.
