History

Historical Context

In June 1975 Indira Gandhi declared a 21-month Emergency, suspending civil liberties and ordering mass expulsions of student activists, with over 100,000 opponents jailed. That top-down control of campuses set a precedent for later disciplinary actions. Today Jamia Millia Islamia’s rustication of LLB student Ebin Basil and JNU’s fines for hunger-strike participants echo the same punitive legacy.
