By Drooid · · How we work
Recall Overview
Family Farmstead Dairy, a Worcester, New York-based producer, announced a voluntary recall of a single lot of its Raw Mild Cheddar Cheese after testing in Maryland identified two strains of Shiga toxin-producing *E. coli*. The affected product carries lot code 7/22/27 and a best-by date of July 22, 2027. No illnesses have been reported in connection with the cheese.
Scope and Distribution
The recalled cheese was shipped to grocery stores in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maryland, Virginia and Massachusetts. The company noted that additional downstream distributors could have moved the product to other states, though no further locations have been confirmed. Family Farmstead Dairy emphasized that no other products from its line are affected.
Health Risks
According to Family Farmstead Dairy, *E. coli* infections can cause diarrhea, often accompanied by bloody stools. While most healthy adults recover within a week, the bacteria can lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome (Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS)), a serious form of kidney failure that poses heightened danger to young children and older adults.
Official Response
Consumers who purchased the cheese are advised to discard it or return it for a refund and may contact the company at 397-4044 or via email at customerservice@familyfarmsteaddairy.com.
